Description

In 1950, the Roman Catholic attorney of Waterbury (Connecticut) founded the Companion of Christ. The aim of this organization was to follow the contemporary trend in the US and open an amusement park built as replica of Biblical and Evangelical sites.

Holy Land USA opened in 1955 as a 7.3-hectar theme park on a hill, inspired by the Bible. It consists of a chapel, stations of the cross, the representation of the Golgotha, an Israelite village constructed from discarded materials. In addition, a cave in the hill was transformed in a replica of early-Christian catacombs. Due to the incredible scarcity of available images, only the entrance of the cave with it signs “Catacombs” is known.  No picture nor description of the interior of the catacomb has been found so far.

Present State

The park closed in 1984 and was abandoned, becoming a dangerous place and a site of crimes. In 2014, part of the area reopened to the public with an inaugural Mass, and is accessible today in daytime.
