Description
The interest that Pius XI had on catacombs, led him to decide that donations from each Catholic country should be earmarked for the preservation of a specific catacomb. Each state was assigned a catacomb. The cemetery of Pretextatus was assaigned to Spain. Spanish support for this catacomb on the occasion of the Jubilee of 1925, when Spanish Catholics had made a large donation for the creation of its museum. In order to fulfil this task, was created the Junta pro Catacumbas de Pretextato.
One of the first actions carried out by this board raise the funds to study and conserve the catacomb was the celebration of a show on 14 February 1927 in the Fontalba theatre.
The event consisted of the staging of tableaux vivants by members of high society. It began with a lecture on Roman catacombs by the writer Félix Llanos y Torriglia, who was accompanied by images to illustrate his speech.
The second part was focused on visualising, on a white backdrop created for this purpose, the images of the various catacombs, including some that showed the state of the catacombs of Pretextato. Particularly striking were the projections illustrating Spelunca Magna, the crypt of San Gennaro and all the frescoes of the catacomb, in order to recreate in theatre the appearance of the site.
